Online spending GROWS again
According to Goldman Sachs, Nielsen/NetRatings and Harris Interactive, online spending grew by 30% from the same period in 2004. Specifically, they mean from Oct 29 thru Dec 23. They break out the numbers for the U.S. but don't give a total. Summing the categories, it looks like a gain of at least $15 billion from the previous year. Personally, I don't shop online much - but it sure looks like a lot of people do. Clothing led the charge, another fact that I wouldn't have thought.
The online market is beginning to mature, with more and more legitimacy and therefore trust that what you see is what you're going to get. Thats good for buyers and sellers. And the usual enablers are there - you guessed it - the search engines that match them up.
On the B2B front, I had a year end chat with a friend in manufacturing who had some time to analyze his year end numbers. He tells me that 15.5% of his machinery is sold because of contact via their website. They don't do anything special (yet) on the web to get this business, other than maintain it and refresh it once in awhile. Turns out that 15.5% is their single best channel for new customers and yet their lowest cost marketing spend (compared to trade shows, sending out mailers etc).
Guess who's going to help turn that from somewhat random success into an online customer acqusition system?...
It's been a great year for us at FoundPages and ActiveMeter. Thanks to all our clients, sub-contractors, partners and associates, for making it a success.
Happy New Year!
