Conversion is the Key

We've been very busy updating our website, and launching www.activemeter.com so we haven't updated this blog in a while. But it's time to get back at it...

Some of our prospects have asked the question 'we know we get traffic, but it doesn't do anything for us, so why bother getting any more?'. This is a valid question, but needs to be answered by addressing your current conversion techniques.

Conversion is when a visitor to your website actually does what you want them to do - like fill out a form for more info, download your software, signup etc. It's the first step in getting tangible value from visitors to your site. However, much like search engine marketing, conversion is something that most websites do poorly. Conversion rates for most sites is less than .2%. A reasonable conversion rate is 2% and a good conversion rate is 5% or more. Successful websites know that conversion is the key to getting ROI. This means a site needs to do more than convey information and look good- one of it's primary goals should be to move the visitor toward a conversion.

With this in mind, you can see why most websites fail in this regard - conversion wasn't one of the design goals. But the advantage is clear - .2% to 2% is a 10x increase in revenue or leads from your website. And .2% to 5% is a 25x increase. So if you were getting 5 leads a month from your website, you could increase that to 50-125!

Imagine the ROI from that. And you don't even have to be using search engine marketing to get that. However, sites that have good conversion usually use search. And to have good conversion, you need to have a great web analytic, like ActiveMeter. I bet you can see how I'm tying this all together now :-)
